1Spatial acquires ComSine
Strengthening Sensor Web capabilities
Cambridge, UK, 19th June 2008 - 1Spatial, a leader in spatial data management, today announces the acquisition of ComSine, a privately owned SME specialising in IT consultancy and development for the telecommunications, navigation and geographic information industries, including satellite Earth observation.
ComSine’s leading edge intellectual property in the communications sector will enable 1Spatial to venture into the rapidly developing Sensor Web Enablement (SWE) marketplace. In line with the growing trend for pervasive computing, this burgeoning area of the geospatial data market sees the convergence of the telecommunications and geospatial industries, with a focus on the real-time capture and management of geospatial information into spatial data infrastructures.
One of ComSine’s most significant projects in this area was the recently completed contract with the British National Space Centre (BNSC) for its ICP2 SensorWeb Project, which saw the development of ‘OSCAR’ (OGC-compliant Sensor Control & Access Resource) - a prototype web services SWE software resource to support the easy integration of in-situ environmental sensors with online information systems.
Additionally, the acquisition of ComSine will support 1Spatial’s implementation of the recently won Ordnance Survey project, through the addition of complimentary skills, whilst also adding proven expertise in winning and implementing European funded business.
With offices in Hampshire, UK and Victoria, Australia, ComSine has a portfolio of over 20 clients including the Ordnance Survey, QinetiQ, the European Space Agency, the Galileo Supervisory Authority, Anite Public Sector, the University of Nottingham and LogicaCMG. ComSine’s established Australian base will facilitate the development of 1Spatial’s emerging presence in the region. Many of ComSine’s web services projects adhere to the open geospatial consortium’s web standards and have interoperability at their heart, which is completely consistent with 1Spatial’s philosophy.
Richard Proud, Managing Director and Co-founder of ComSine is joining 1Spatial to head up a new specialist team in geospatial and telecommunications convergence.
The acquisition is expected to increase 1Spatial’s topline annual revenues by about £0.5m.
Dr Mike Sanderson, CEO of 1Spatial commented, “I am delighted to be able announce the acquisition of ComSine, our fifth acquisition to date. ComSine’s proven leadership in the developing market for Sensor Web implementations will position us at the forefront of the one of the latest technological trends in the geospatial data market, supporting what we believe will be another excellent year of growth for 1Spatial.”
Richard Proud, MD of ComSine commented, “This is a very exciting opportunity for us to become part of a leading geospatial data management company. We believe there is great synergy between our respective technologies and we look forward to our expertise contributing to the group’s future success.”

About Richard Proud
Richard entered the spatial industry following the completion of his masters in 1985, starting his career as a software developer for the start-up Earth Observation Sciences Limited (EOS). In 1991 he then joined Serco Servizi to work at the European Space Agency’s facility in Frascati as an Earth observation applications scientist, He returned to EOS in 1992 where his operational instincts led him into project management, finally acting as Operations Manager and then General Manager of EOS until early 2001. Richard then took up the challenge of moving into the telecommunications sector by joining a small Australian technology company, DSpace, to run their UK operation, Turbo Communications Limited (TCL). Here he joined up with Dr Ian Morrison, TCL’s Technical Director, before the two of them left to form ComSine in late 2002. ComSine has grown to provide advanced consulting and software/hardware development services in the mobile communications, satellite navigation and spatial web service sectors.
