PCI Geomatics contributes to WHRC project on National Biomass & Carbon Dataset
Richmond Hill, Ontario – February 26, 2008: PCI Geomatics is pleased to announce that the donation of its Geomatica software has contributed to the Woods Hole Research Center project for producing the National Biomass and Carbon Dataset (NBCD2000) for the year 2000. A world leading developer of geospatial software and solutions for geospatial imaging applications, PCI Geomatics provided Geomatica Version 9.1 to the project for image pre-processing.
The NBCD2000 will provide an invaluable baseline for quantifying the carbon stock in United States forests and will improve current methods of assessing the carbon flux between forests and the atmosphere. The goal of the project is to reduce the uncertainty in biomass and carbon accounting; global tools are needed to reduce this uncertainty, and only remote sensing can provide the global perspective that is needed.
Dr. Josef Kellndorfer, who leads the project states, “We are excited to release the first data sets to the research community and are on track to provide the completed final data set by 2009. With its fine spatial resolution of ca. 30 meters, we think that NBCD2000 will be an invaluable contribution to understanding the vegetation component in the North American carbon balance. PCI’s Geomatica software is a backbone for the production of such an ambitious data set.”
“PCI Geomatics is committed to sustaining our earth and was therefore delighted to donate Geomatica to WHRC for their environmentally conscious project,” said Alysia Vetter, Marketing Manager at PCI Geomatics. “By using our software, we are helping researchers to better understand the North American carbon balance.”
As part of the NBCD2000 initiative, mapping is being conducted within 67 ecologically diverse regions, “mapping zones”, which span the conterminous United States. Five of the nine zones were completed during this 2 year pilot phase and the remaining zones will be finished by early 2009.
