18th February 2008, Cambridge, UK.  1Spatial announces a free INSPIRE seminar as a precursor to their 2008 Conference, which runs from Wednesday 30th April until Thursday 1st May at the Radisson SAS Hotel, Stansted Airport, UK.

Hosted by Robin Waters, Chair of the AGI Working Group for INSPIRE, this free seminar will provide a comprehensive introduction to INSPIRE (Infrastructure for Spatial Information in Europe), covering the potential business impact of INSPIRE on stakeholders. Rob Walker, Independent Consultant and 2008 Chair of AGI, who is also a Member of AGI Working Group on INSPIRE, will run a workshop highlighting the Implementing Rules for metadata and how metadata issues can be addressed by organisations responsible for datasets that may be affected by INSPIRE.

The European Union’s INSPIRE Directive came into force on 15th May 2007 and can be described as the European Spatial Data Infrastructure programme (ESDI). It creates a legal framework for the establishment and operation of an ESDI for the purpose of formulating, implementing, monitoring and evaluating Community policies at all levels, and providing public information. It lays down the ‘ground rules’ and arrangements which enable spatial data from separate digital databases to be combined seamlessly without undue difficulty, and for such datasets to be widely available and used, not just for viewing but also for comparison and analysis.

Many organisations across Europe are familiar with challenges relating to spatial information, such as fragmentation of datasets and sources, gaps in availability, lack of harmonisation between datasets at different geographical scales and duplication of information collection. These problems make it difficult to identify, access and (re)use spatial data that may already be available nationally and internationally. The workshop will address some of the spatial data quality issues relating to these areas and highlight some possibilities for resolving them.

Why attend this free INSPIRE seminar and workshop?

·                     If you have responsibility for collection, management or use of spatial data and don’t know anything about INSPIRE; attend and learn more

·                     If you are already aware of INSPIRE and need to prepare for implementation, attend to hear about practical suggestions and resources available to help you.

·                     If you have already started your preparation for INSPIRE, come and meet others dealing with similar issues and share experiences.

When: Tuesday 29th April 2008, 12noon

Where: Radisson SAS Hotel, Stansted Airport, UK

The workshop is followed by the 1Spatial Conference 2008 and is only open to registered conference delegates. Registration is NOW OPEN, with an early bird discount available until 1st March.
