Ordnance Survey, the national mapping agency of Great Britain, has chosen the three-company team of Intergraph, 1Spatial and Snowflake Software to drive production efficiency, improve data consistency and support the creation of new products.

16th October, Cambridge, UK.  After an extensive tender following the Competitive Dialogue Procedure under the European Union Public Procurement regulations, 1Spatial is delighted to announce that it has been chosen as part of a three-company team, led by Intergraph Corporation, to provide Ordnance Survey with a next generation geospatial workflow planning solution via a geospatial database and data management system.

Ordnance Survey is internationally renowned and is relied upon to provide the most accurate and up-to-date geographical information for government, business and individual usage. The geographic database describes more than 440 million individual features and is subjected to over a million changes and updates every year.  Measuring and assimilating these changes into the database requires accurate and efficient planning and control.

The proposed solution was chosen to provide the new system which will provide enterprise-wide capabilities for the management, planning, coordination, and control of data capture and production activities. Ordnance Survey’s large-scale data holdings will be managed in a centralised geospatial database, and a standards-based interface will integrate field and office-based editing tools as well as those from external contractors. The system will ensure consistency between Ordnance Survey products and enable it to develop new ones.

The selection of the three-company team is a good example of the benefits of working with open standards meaning that Ordnance Survey will gain the best technology from different suppliers within the industry.

“This is an important step forward on the development of our seamless data management system,” said Bob Goodrich, Ordnance Survey’s Director of Information Systems. “As a result of this implementation, we will have a truly modernised system that will provide the nation with unprecedented access to current, accurate data.”

1Spatial’s contribution to the project will focus around data quality management and will utilise 1Spatial’s Radius Studio™ product, a spatial processing, analysis and compliance engine that makes comprehensive use of the Oracle technology stack. The Ordnance Survey Data Quality Team (DQM) have previously worked with the Radius Studio product as a potential addition or enhancement to their tool kit for independent testing of spatial data quality. This collaboration has allowed for Radius Studio to be architected to deliver an enterprise level solution to the complex process of data capture, management and production as well as quality control of that data.

1Spatial’s market-leading expertise in data quality assurance combined with their previous experience of working with Ordnance Survey and their data and processes makes them an ideal provider in this important project.

Mike Sanderson, Chief Executive Officer of 1Spatial commented

“We are extremely delighted to be working with Intergraph and Snowflake on this important project. The combined team has collaborated on a number of projects over the last 4 years and all three organisations have great experience in the geospatial market and, more specifically, a pedigree of delivering high quality solutions to Ordnance Survey.  At 1Spatial we believe we are at a pivotal point in geospatial systems evolution where collaborations of this nature are increasingly required in order to provide enterprise-scale systems that simplify the spatial data supply chain across and between organisations such as Ordnance Survey.”
