Cadcorp SIS provides GIS software base for SSi’s new Fire Hydrant Management System

New system enables entire life-cycle management of fire hydrants and open water sources.
Stevenage, Herts, UK. 4 September, 2007. – Digital mapping and geographic information systems (GIS) software developer Cadcorp has announced that SSi Solutions Ltd. has selected Cadcorp SIS – Spatial Information System as the digital mapping/GIS core of the new SSi Fire Hydrant Management System (FHMS).

This fourth generation of SSi’s hydrant management system is a powerful, digital map-based management tool that is fully compliant with the UK fire service’s Convergence Outcome 52: Water Supplies. The product enables fire and rescue services to manage the entire life-cycle of their fire hydrants and open water sources. The new system supports both office-based and point-of-inspection input of data, optionally using PDAs, as well as updating and reviewing of operational status and management information.

While only recently launched, the new SSi FHMS has already been installed at both Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service and Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service, and is currently being installed at Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service.

Peter Garyga of Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service stated, “The embedded Cadcorp SIS engine is a major attraction, providing an excellent visual representation of the environment. In addition, the database features and layout of the new system is far superior to our existing system. SSi’s Fire Hydrant Management System is the preferred hydrant management system in the East Midlands region, with both Nottingham and Leicestershire already on board. As such, it seemed the logical solution, and at a competitive price.”

Steve Waddington, IS manager, Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service, commented, “We needed to replace our existing hydrant database system in order to gain extra functionality and more accurate positioning data in advance of the new Regional Control Centre. With its industry-standard GIS platform and close integration with our existing GIS and CAD systems, we felt that SSI’s FHMS was more likely than other systems we looked at to meet our needs. We also expect its GPS-enabled handhelds to assist us considerably in collecting data in the field, both as part of our obligations towards regional control and for the continuing task of maintaining an efficient hydrant maintenance programme. This is a value-for-money system that will enable us to make a step change in the management of a vital resource.”

“We are delighted that SSi chose to base its new Fire Hydrant Management System on Cadcorp SIS,” said Mike O’Neil, managing director, Cadcorp. “SSi is an established Cadcorp business partner for the emergency services and we look forward to working with their experts to bring this new system the success it deserves in the market.”
