Germany’s Birth Rate

According to the latest statistics, 707,778 babies were born in Germany in 2005. This equates to approximately 8.6 “new citizens” per 1,000 inhabitants per year. Noticeable differences exist in the birth rates of individual regions and districts. Northern Westphalia, western Lower Saxony and all of southern Germany have above average birth rates, while most of former East Germany has a birth rate lower than the national average.

The birth rate is not just a social barometer, but also an economic one, as population growth bears directly on market potential. For example, the number of births directly correlates to the number of potential consumers for specific infant products within a given region. Also, it stands to reason that where there are many infants, there are also parents of a certain age
group with distinctive consumer needs and interests.

Close scrutiny of birth rate trends allows one to track and calculate precisely certain societal developments, such as the number of kindergarten places needed or the level of demand for schoolbooks.

The fact that some mid-sized cities are shown to have significantly higher birth rates than those of the surrounding regions is due to the method of calculation: The place of birth is often not the place of residence. Particularly in rural areas, most children are born in a few central hospitals and birth clinics (Data source: GfK GeoMarketing).
