Jared Diamond and Rebecca Solnit
 

Four critically acclaimed authors, Jared Diamond, Rebecca Solnit, Barry Lopez, and Milton Viorst, will address special sessions of the 2007 AAG (Association of American Geographers) Annual Meeting held April 17-21 in San Francisco (Hilton Hotel, 333 O’Farrell St.). Jared Diamond, the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Guns, Germs, and Steel, will address the opening session on Tuesday, April 17 at 6 p.m. In his most recent book, Collapse, Diamond examines how environmental issues impacted the rise and fall of ancient civilizations and discusses how similar issues may impact the modern world. “The Language of Landscape,” a special session on Friday, April 20, will feature noted authors Rebecca Solnit and Barry Lopez, beginning at 6 p.m. Solnit, a Guggenheim and National Endowment for the Humanities fellow, wrote the best-selling Wanderlust: A History of Walking. Lopez, a National Book Award honoree, often writes about the intricate relationships between culture and natural landscapes. His books include the recent Home Ground: Language for an American Landscape, in which 45 poets and nature writers create more than 850 original definitions for geographic and landscape terms.Former New Yorker Middle East correspondent Milton Viorst will discuss “Iraq and the

Middle East” on Wednesday, April 18.
Each author will be available for questions following their presentations.The 2007 AAG Annual Meeting will feature more than 3,000 presentations on the latest in geographic research and approximately 7,000 attendees from around the world.
