Waghäusel, November 30, 2006 Picture of the Month Number of HIV infections in Europe 2005 According to the latest statistics from the WHO (World Health Organization), most people living with HIV/AIDS in Europe are from countries in the eastern region of Europe, such as the Russian Federation with 940,000 HIV-infected persons, followed by the Ukraine with approximately 410,000 cases. In Western Europe, the highest estimated number of HIV-infected adults and children live in Italy (150,000), Spain (140, 000), France (130,000) and the UK (68,000). There are approximately 49,000 people living with HIV in Germany. Compared with previous years, the number of HIV infections in Eastern Europe and the Russian Federation has increased dramatically. But not only in these countries are the numbers of HIV infections growing - for example, the UK has reported 14,000 new cases since 2003. Therefore, on December 1st, World Aids Day, politicians and celebrities appeal for more awareness in order to fight prejudice and improve education. GfK GeoMarketing has created a map which shows the cases of new HIV-infections per 1.000 inhabitants in Europe. Figures underneath the country names are absolute values.
